When Commando Comics were first published in July 1961, D.C. Thompson & Co. Ltd did not know how much of a hit the series would be. They originally published two a month but due to increased popularity they were forced to increase publication to four a month and in 1981 they started publishing eight a month. The series has become well-known for its seven and a half inch size and its sixty-eight page format.
